CFRD welcomes competitive-minded people from all walks of life who can dedicate the time and energy it takes to become a roller derby skater. You must be at least 18 years old to play roller derby.
It certainly helps if you are already athletic and have skating experience, but it is not required. All you need is a positive attitude, an open mind, and the willingness to skate hard, keep pushing when things get tough, and be able to learn. Equipment is available (first come first serve) to borrow for the first few nights of boot camp practice if you do not have your own to start off.
At Registration Night, you will fill out some paperwork so we can learn about you, and then many of our team skaters will talk about the details of how our league works, and what to expect. After our chat, we’ll enjoy a fun skate around Scooters so you can meet and skate with our skaters in a low-pressure environment and ask any specific questions you might have.
After Registration Night is over, if you want to stick with us, you will enter into our Roller Derby New Recruit Bootcamp where you will learn the skills necessary to become a Cape Fear Roller Derby skater, meet and bond with a group of amazingly diverse new friends and develop a new derby obsession! To sign up, visit our Facebook Event Page to RSVP and then come to registration night!
During our 12-week Boot Camp which meets on Wednesday Nights, we will teach you:
- Basic skating skills (stopping, turning, crossovers, skating backwards, etc)
- How to fall safely and how to safely get back up
- Equipment maintenance and what type of gear you should buy (and not buy)
- General fitness, balance, and strength
- and then when you are ready we will start with gentle contact
- and eventually you will progress to learn strategy and gameplay!
Skaters will not be in contact with each other until you are ready!
If you want to be involved with roller derby but…
A.) do not identify as female ~OR~
B.) Love to skate but aren’t sure if you like the idea of getting knocked around or the intensity of competing; ~OR~
C.) Don’t want to skate at all but want to be involved because it looks awesome (it is!) and you want to make some new friends and volunteer at practices or games…
Then still come to Registration Night to find out about joining our fantastic referee (skating) or NSO (non-skating) crew! We teach these positions and you can meet like-minded individuals and be some of the critical components that help our league run successfully!
Not sure if roller derby is for you, but know somebody who may want to be involved? Do us all a favor and share this event with them.
